Quakers Are Having a Moment

Every so often something happens in the world that makes people start asking questions that lead them to Quakerism. We are living through one of those moments.

How can we best be prepared for the influx of seekers distraught by the sudden shift of our culture away from values like peace, integrity, and simplicity? How can we witness to these “fruits of the spirit” that Quakers have been experiencing for nearly 400 years?

For me, the answer begins with a question: “where are seekers looking?”

Luckily, the answer to that one is simple: they are looking online. For information, for inspiration, and for connection to community. It is so important that those searching for Friends finds something more compelling than Wikipedia.

In the 17th century, the Quaker movement grew rapidly because most peoples’ first encounter with Friends was through our ministries. Whether it was hearing one of us speak on a street corner, or reading a Quaker pamphlet, it was our principle of “letting our lives preach” that opened listeners’ hearts and helped them feel solidarity in their suspicion that there was another way.

We hear nearly every day now from readers and listeners that our work on Thee Quaker touched them during a time of seeking. Just yesterday we heard from a listener in Texas who discovered Friends through our podcast and is starting a Quaker Meeting in her living room. She’s fired up.

We should be fired up, too. Just two years in, Thee Quaker has already built an audience of nearly 10,000 monthly listeners and readers, and that number is growing quickly.

Here’s a brief update on our work of lifting up our ministries and giving Quakers a platform in the 21st century.

Podcast Prepares to Launch Season 3

In June, our new podcast producer Zack Jackson launched a monthlong “mini-season” exploring stories that are relevant to the current moment.

This “mini-season” shattered all of our previous records for listenership and reach. Listen here:

The podcast will be back with weekly episodes in August. Season 3 will focus on the theme of “Quaker Prophetic Witness”. Exciting! Make sure you are subscribed!

Summer Break for The Daily Quaker Message

The Daily Quaker Message has been exploring themes of “speaking truth to power,” “hope and despair,” and “quaker women.” Editor Maeve Sutherland wrote a particularly popular message, reflecting on the month’s theme of “hope and despair.” It’s a special one… Give it a read for some wisdom and perspective.

Beyond the above message shared with readers, Maeve has some exciting news for our Thee Quaker community: in June she welcomed a new baby into her family! Maeve will be out on maternity until September. In the meantime, messages will go out only on Sundays.

And if spiritual grounding and inspiration in your email inbox sounds good to you, sign up to get the Daily Quaker Message!

Launching in September: Quaker Videos

Since I started doing this work in 2013, I always dreamed of handing it over to bona fide filmmakers, who would use their considerable talents to give Quaker stories the “Ken Burns” treatment.

As you are reading this, our two talented filmmakers are doing just that: criss-crossing the country, telling Quaker stories in beautiful high-definition. We are starting to see their final edits, and they take my breath away.

We will start publishing weekly Quaker videos in September. Make sure you are subscribed!

None of this work would be possible without the support of our many generous donors. If you are one of them, thank you so much. If you haven’t quite made that step yet, here’s an easy way to do it:

in peace
